Anima
Christi
"Soul of Christ, sanctify
me,"
this beautiful ancient Latin prayer begins.
It is believed to originate from the first half of the fourteenth
century, and indulgences were ascribed to it by Pope John XXII
in 1330. The author is debated; the "Anima Christi"
is popularly attributed to St. Ignatius Loyola. However, the
prayer is in manuscripts written a hundred years before his
birth in 1491.
